Chapter 21
The first official night of courting Paul MacKeen came quicker than Violet thought it would. There was something different about actually having a man to court, and one who was eager to court her, at that. It felt almost as if she had done something completely wrong, but something that needed to happen for a variety of reasons.
This time, instead of meeting in the gardens without a chaperone, Laura was going to chaperone them as they walked through the trails. Those that had been here before them had carved out trails going up, down, and all around this property. There were plenty to choose from, and not even Violet had seen them all yet, despite going through and trying to find everything she could over the years she had come here as a child.
She wondered if Kathleen would remember that. Regardless, she forced her mind to focus on the way she felt around Paul MacKeen. Surely, she would have time to think about everything else after Paul had left her for the day.
“How do you do, Lady Violet? Are all well at home?”
Lord Paul started the conversation with a brisk opening, and she had to stifle a laugh. They were well beyond this kind of conversation, she thought, but she would humour him.
“All is well at home. How do you do?”
She returned the favour, unsure of what else she could say at this point. They had really done this too many times for her to find it worth talking about anymore, but that was neither here nor there.
“I am well, thank you, Lady Violet.”
He smiled at her. Laura seemed to be approving of what they were doing. However, Violet could not help thinking that this would be better if Aunt Marion had been escorting them. Technically, they were not permitted to be without an escort, and the escort had to be older than the couple. Laura was not older than Lord Paul; she knew that much. Laura was only a couple of months older than Violet.
It was an odd thing, to be escorted by a young woman her age.
“We are having lovely weather, yes?”
She grasped at straws, trying to keep the boring conversation alive so that perhaps she would not get yelled at by Laura.
“Yes. Lovely weather.”
Paul seemed to be struggling with the quaint kind of conversation they were meant to have with an escort present. She wondered how this would go should they continue to have to think about what to say like this. She did not believe it would go very well, but she would be amused to try.
“Do you know who created these paths?” He found another topic that was interesting without crossing a societal line.
“I do not. They have been here since I was a child.” She smiled a little. “I have walked many of these paths over the years.”
“Have you walked all of them, do you think, Lady Violet?” He frowned a little, somewhat deep in thought or otherwise, with his mind engaged.
“I do not believe I have walked every path here.
